Clean or Custom: which CMS is Best?

Late last year, the first ever FullCodePress International Site In A Day Competition was held in Sydney, Australia. The two teams (Australia and New Zealand) worked solidly for 24 hours, and at the end of the competition two not-for-profit clients walked away from the competition with brand new sites.

An interesting discussion arose on the SitePoint blogs in the aftermath of the competition, posing the question: when you're building a new site for a client, should you use an existing CMS, or should you build the CMS from scratch? Team Australia used Drupal, while the CodeBlacks (the New Zealand team) built their CMS from scratch on the day. The two back-end developers involved in the competition both had plenty to say on the matter, so I decided to talk to them some more about it. Here's what they said...
